SharePoint customizations at LG Electronics

Initial situation

The company’s internal SharePoint 2010 database at the LG Technology Center Europe for internal knowledge management of Open Innovation activities needed to be overhauled and expanded. A migration to SharePoint 2016 was also planned for a later stage. The client requested a redesign of the homepage of the globally used database, both visually and functionally, as well as an expansion of the environment to include project management capabilities, including approval processes.

Project workflow

The knowledge database in SharePoint and its significant importance for the company’s technology sector necessitated bringing various global user groups and their interests together. Rocketta conducted workshops in collaboration with the LG Technology Center Europe to plan the future environment. Based on LG’s requirements, a tile-based homepage concept was designed, along with the integration of search functionalities and managed metadata in the form of a taxonomy from the technology segment. Additionally, a targeted adjustment of the homepage was made for different corporate groups, and a bilingual (English/Korean) login interface with password security was created for Korean colleagues.

In addition to the homepage, the project management operated through SharePoint lists needed to be adapted. In particular, the layout of input forms was modernized, and access control to individual projects was simplified and tailored to customer requirements. Specific workflows for project approval and completion were also integrated to make the globally used process significantly more efficient in the future.

The migration to SharePoint 2016 was desired at a later stage. A schedule was created with LG for the migration to take place outside of global business hours. Due to time zone differences, this was only possible on weekends. Following the migration, thorough testing was conducted jointly to ensure that all environments and functionalities were functioning properly.

As these were business-critical processes, it was essential to carry out the transition as smoothly and quickly as possible, so that users would not experience significant disruptions. In both cases – during development and migration – this was consistently ensured.
