Getting Started

The World Cup 2026 Prediction Game for SharePoint is a free SharePoint web part that allows employees to predict match results, save their tips directly in SharePoint, and follow their ranking on a live leaderboard.

This guide explains how to install the solution, add the web part to a SharePoint page, complete the initial setup and start using the prediction game.

1. Requirements

Before you begin, make sure the following requirements are met:

  • You have a Microsoft 365 tenant with SharePoint Online.
  • You have permission to upload and deploy SharePoint Framework solution packages in the SharePoint App Catalog.
  • You have permission to add apps or web parts to the target SharePoint site.
  • For the initial setup, you need a user account with permission to create lists on the current SharePoint site.

No separate user registration is required. After the app has been installed and added to a SharePoint page, users can open the page and start using the prediction game.

2. Install the SharePoint solution

First, install the SharePoint solution package in your tenant.

  1. Open your SharePoint App Catalog.
  2. Upload the provided solution package.
  3. Deploy the solution for your tenant.
  4. Open the SharePoint site where you want to use the prediction game.
  5. Add the app or make sure the web part is available on the site.

For detailed deployment steps, see the installation guide:

3. Add the web part to a SharePoint page

After the solution has been installed, add the prediction game web part to a SharePoint page.

  1. Open the SharePoint page where you want to show the prediction game.
  2. Edit the page.
  3. Add a new section. A full-width section is recommended if available.
  4. Add the World Cup 2026 Prediction Game web part.
  5. Publish or republish the page.

The web part is designed to work well on an intranet landing page, campaign page or dedicated World Cup 2026 prediction page.

4. Complete the initial setup

When the web part is added for the first time, it shows an initial setup message. This message explains that a SharePoint list must be created on the current site to store the prediction data.

Click Create List to start the setup.

The setup creates a hidden SharePoint list that stores the users’ predictions. Permission inheritance is broken for this list, and the required SharePoint groups receive contribute permissions. Site administrators can add permissions for additional SharePoint groups if required.

5. Start entering predictions

After the initial setup is complete, the prediction table is displayed.

Users can enter their goal predictions directly in the table:

  1. Find the match you want to predict.
  2. Enter the predicted number of goals for both teams.
  3. Click Save.
  4. A confirmation message is shown after the prediction has been saved.

The web part displays upcoming matches with text boxes for the goal predictions. The existing instructions show this prediction table and the save confirmation flow.

6. Use pagination to browse matches

If not all matches are visible on the current page, use the pagination controls below the match table to navigate through the available matches.

The number of matches shown per page can be configured in the web part settings.

7. View saved predictions and scores

After saving predictions, users can reload the page and see their previously entered tips.

When a match has already started, users can no longer change their prediction for that match. Once the result is available, the match result is shown and the user’s score is displayed.

The score is calculated based on:

  • The actual match result
  • The user’s saved prediction
  • The scoring rules configured in the web part settings

The existing test instructions show how saved predictions, match results and the “Your score” section are displayed after a page reload.

8. Configure scoring and display settings

Site owners or editors can configure the web part settings.

The available settings include:

  • Number of points for correctly predicting the match winner
  • Number of points for correctly predicting the match winner and the winner’s number of goals
  • Number of points for correctly predicting the number of goals of both teams
  • Number of matches displayed per page
  • Legend text shown below the ranking table

Use the legend text to explain the scoring rules to your users.

9. Understand the leaderboard

The leaderboard shows the current ranking of participants.

Only users who have saved at least one prediction are shown in the ranking table. Points are calculated from the match results, the saved user predictions and the configured scoring rules. The ranking table displays users, their rank and their points.

10. Match timetable and results

The match timetable and results are updated automatically through Rocketta’s public service.

Users only need to enter and save their predictions. Match data and results are provided automatically by the app service.
